Chicago-born international racing star Davy Jones turns 54 today. A one-time Formula 1 prospect who later turned his attention to sports cars, Jones won both the 1990 24 Hours of Daytona and 1996 24 Hours of Le Mans. Despite an unsuccessful foray into NASCAR in 1995, Jones placed second in the 1996 Indianapolis 500 for Galles Racing and planned to run in the Indy Racing League full-time in 1997 before suffering an injury and returning to sports cars.

Pictured are Racing Champions’ replicas of Jones’ two IRL vehicles from 1996 (back left) and 1997 (front right). Note that Jones never actually raced the 1997 car; his injury was suffered in a practice crash before the season opener at Walt Disney World Speedway.
