Rene Arnoux took his first Formula 1 victory for Scuderia Ferrari, and the fifth of his career, in the 1983 Canadian Grand Prix. Coming off of three straight retirements, the win kicked off a torrid six-race span for the Frenchman, featuring three victories, five podiums, and six of his eight points paying finishes on the year—propelling him to a career-high third in the championship at season’s end.
Over 42 seconds behind him, Eddie Cheever equaled a career best by placing second for Renault, while Patrick Tambay brought home the other Ferrari in third. Defending champion Keke Rosberg was the fourth and final driver to finish on the lead lap in Circuit Gilles Villeneuve’s sixth Canadian GP, more than a minute off the pace.
